Nginx vs Caddy in 2026: Which Reverse Proxy Should You Use?

Choosing a reverse proxy is one of the foundational decisions in any infrastructure. For over a decade, Nginx has been the default answer. But Caddy, with its automatic HTTPS and developer-friendly configuration, has matured into a serious production contender. In 2026, both projects are actively maintained, performant, and feature-rich. So which one should we pick?

This article compares Nginx and Caddy across the dimensions that matter most to DevOps teams: SSL automation, configuration syntax, raw performance, extensibility, and operational overhead.

Nginx

With Nginx, we need to install Certbot separately, run it to obtain certificates, and configure a cron job or systemd timer for renewal:

Then we add SSL directives to the Nginx config:

Caddy's Caddyfile is intentionally minimal. A reverse proxy with rate limiting and compression looks like this:

The equivalent Nginx configuration is more verbose but gives finer control over individual directives. For teams that are already fluent in Nginx syntax, this is not a drawback. For newcomers, Caddy has a significantly lower learning curve.

In our testing with wrk on a 4-core VM serving a simple reverse-proxy workload:

Nginx edges ahead in raw throughput, but the gap has narrowed significantly since Caddy 2.0. For the vast majority of workloads, both are more than fast enough.

4. HTTP/3 and QUIC

Caddy ships with built-in HTTP/3 support. Enabling it is automatic when HTTPS is active.

Nginx added experimental HTTP/3 support via the ngx_http_v3_module. As of 2026 it is considered stable but still requires compiling Nginx with the --with-http_v3_module flag or using a distribution that includes it.

5. When to Use Nginx

  • We need advanced features like stream (TCP/UDP) proxying, or complex request routing with Lua via OpenResty

Caddy is the modern alternative that trades a small amount of raw performance for dramatically simpler operations. For greenfield projects where automatic HTTPS and minimal config are priorities, we lean toward Caddy. For complex, high-scale existing deployments, Nginx continues to deliver.
